Garage door openers are precisely what their name implies. They are a piece of equipment used to automate the process of opening and closing your garage doors. The whole purpose of an automatic garage door opener is to make it easier for the homeowner. Without one, you are forced to open the door manually, back your vehicle out, then get out of the vehicle to close the door. A garage door opener eliminates all that work. When you install a garage door opener, all you have to do is push a button to open and close your door. This makes your life a lot easier and provides additional security to your garage, as your door cannot be lifted without a designated opener paired specifically with it.

Though many garage door openers have the same basic features, there is always an opportunity to upgrade to a model with extra features. If you’re purchasing a new opener, our team will help you understand which features come standard and which models have the extras. Obviously, these extra features come at a price, but often this is justified by the added convenience and security the features provide. We can help you find the perfect opener with all the features you need and install it. We’ll go over the standard features as well as some of the extra add-ons below:

  • Remotes: All garage door openers come with a wall-mount button or keypad, as well as remotes to put in your vehicles. These are all able to open and close the garage door with a single touch.
  • Manual Release: Every garage door opener has a manual release feature that can be used to disconnect the opener from the door, allowing you to raise and lower the door manually. This may be necessary if the power goes out and the opener won’t work.
  • Security Light: Most openers have a security light that is attached to the same box as the motor. This light will activate when you open and close the door and automatically turns off after a set period of time. Many newer openers also feature motion sensors which mean you will never walk into a dark garage.
  • Battery Backup: If you want the option of using your opener during a power outage, some options come with a battery backup feature. If the power goes out, the opener will run on a battery instead, allowing you to still use your door.
  • Smart Device Compatibility: These days, we can control almost anything with our smart devices, and garage door openers are beginning to offer this feature. With smart device capability, you can operate and monitor the opener with your mobile device.
  • Auto-Close Feature: For added security, you can choose a door with an auto-close feature. This feature will automatically close a garage door if it has been left open for more than a pre-determined amount of time.

Most standard garage door openers will function in a similar manner to lift and lower the door. The opener consists of an electric motor that drives a trolley along a rail. This trolley is connected to the garage door, and when the opener is activated, the trolley pulls the door open or closed. Though most garage doors operate in this basic manner, there are still different types of openers in terms of how the motor moves the trolley. These different types of openers include:

  • Belt-Drive Garage Opener: Belt-drive openers work in the same way as chain-drive, but rather than using a chain, they use a belt. Though these openers cost slightly more, the belt makes for quieter operation.
  • Chain-Drive Garage Opener: This opener uses a chain that is attached to the trolley. The chain moves much like a bicycle chain, running in a loop. As the chain moves, it pulls the trolley and, with it, the door.
  • Jackshaft Opener: A jackshaft opener can be mounted on the garage wall and uses a powerful motor combined with a torsion spring to open and close the door. These door openers help you save ceiling space in your garage and operate quietly.

Unfortunately, your garage door opener won’t last forever, and you’ll have to replace it. If your opener has been acting strange, it may be trying to tell you that it’s time for a replacement. Our team can help you determine if your opener can be repaired or if it’s time to consider buying a new one. Some of the most common signs that your opener needs to be replaced include:

  • Your opener vibrates when in use.
  • The door opens but then immediately reverses to the closed position.
  • Your opener makes more noise than it used to.
  • The door doesn’t respond when you press the button to open it.
